What Were You Thinking?

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance.  It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.

Colossians 3:23-24

When my son was very young, he played baseball for a coach who wanted to win.  Unfortunately, for that coach, the assistant coach was more interested in seeing what the boys could do, than winning.  The assistant coach was the third base coach and almost every time a player made it to third base, the assistant coach would tell the player to try to steal home plate.  The boy would go for it, and most of the time the boy was tagged out.

This caused the coach to wave his arms in the air, and yell at the assistant coach, “What were you thinking?”

After a few games, the parents took to laughing and applauding the coach’s question.

And, the kids thought it was the coolest thing ever to try to steal home.  Even if they were called out, there was lots of backslapping and admiration for the ones who tried.

That’s the way it is when we do our best for God.  We don’t have to be totally victorious or perfect.  Sometimes we might even fail in our efforts – but the important thing is that we try.  We are not working for earthly rewards, but for the final big reward when we stand before God.
