“For
John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He
has a demon!’
The
Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold a gluttonous man
and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’”
Luke
7:33-34
Even
John the Baptist and Jesus were not immune to criticism. No matter what they did, they were judged to
be not what religious people should be.
It
is still the same today. Christians
often take a bad rap no matter what they do.
For example, the United Methodist Church is portrayed as being too
liberal and the evangelical churches are portrayed as being too
conservative.
What
is interesting is that critics of the church are often people who have never
been to church except for weddings and funerals. We need to keep this in mind and not be too
quick to question what we are doing when we are criticized. All we need to be concerned with is what the
Bible says about what we are doing. If
our actions line up with the Word of God, then we need to write off our critics
for what they are: people who cannot be
expected to understand our actions because they lack knowledge.
Jesus
is our Lord, Master and Savior and His Word rules our lives, not the opinions
of our critics.
