Do
not rob the poor because he is poor,
Or
crush the afflicted at the gate;
For
the Lord will plead their case
And
take the life of those who rob them.
Proverbs
22:22-23
The
Book of Proverbs is not just a how to live well book; it is also a how to make
the lives of other people better book. The
purpose of the Book of Proverbs is given in verse 1:3: “To receive instruction in
wise behavior, righteousness, justice and equity.”
When
we treat people fairly and speak up against injustice,
we are fulfilling the Gospel. Jesus said,
“In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you….” (Matthew 7:12).
There
is nothing wrong with being poor. What
is wrong is the way we treat poor people. We
should extend righteousness, justice and equity to everyone and that includes poor
people.
