Peter
began to say to Him (Jesus), “Behold we have left everything and followed You.”
Jesus
said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or
sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake or for the
gospel’s sake, but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in present
age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along
with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the
last, first.”
Mark
10:28-31
Everything
has a price. Being a Christian may cost
us some friends or the support of family members who don’t like the new
us. Or, we may be persecuted for our
faith. Sometimes things may not look so
good to us.
That
was what Peter was going through. He was
worried that following Jesus had cost him too much. Jesus
reminded him that what we experience here on earth is only temporary and our rewards
are eternal, not earthly.
The price we pay to serve Christ is far lower than the price He paid for our salvation. Christianity is not a short term investment, it is a long term commitment, and for eternal life that price is right.
