Now
there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and
teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was
called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with
Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
While
they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart
for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Then
when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them
away.
So,
being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there
they sailed to Cyprus.
Acts
13:1-4
When
we read the Book of Acts it is apparent that the first century Christian Church
was constantly on the move. The Gospel was carried to all parts of the mid-east, Asia and
Europe. Sometimes, the missionaries were
commissioned by the Church to go and others were missionaries by
default as they fled persecution.
In
either case, the net result was the preaching of the Gospel and
people coming to know Jesus as their Savior.
God
is still sending out missionaries. Some
go voluntarily and some go because they have lost their job or have been
transferred or their family is moving.
It does matter why we go as long as we take the Gospel with us and
unpack it for all to hear, because we all are God’s missionaries.
