The
soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the soul of the diligent is
made fat.
Proverbs
13:4
Ahhh,
winter! Cold temperatures and piles of
snow keep us inside. It is when we cover
up with a blanket and sit immobile doing nothing. As nice as it may seem to snuggle up, it is
totally unproductive and it is not particularly good for us spiritually.
What
to do? As the kids would say, “Shake it
off.” Stand up, get moving. Look around find something which needs doing
and do it or better yet, find something you want to do. When my children were home we favored playing
board games. Now that I am old and
rusty, I turn to cleaning places which have been untouched for a long time –
like the kitchen cupboards.
A
clean house is nice but what about taking the Word of God to the world? How
are we going to do that when the car won’t start and neither will we?
Perhaps
we can telephone someone who we have not talked to in a while and see how they
are doing. We can share the love of God
by listening and sharing their joy or sorrow.
It will cost us nothing except giving up our sluggishness for a bit.
And,
it will make our souls fat.
