“All
things are lawful, but not all things are profitable, all things are lawful,
but not all things edify.” I Corinthians
10:23
Just
because it is legal does not mean it is right.
For years Christians have wrestled with ideas and vices which the
government legalizes, but which the Bible seems to forbid or discourage. Things like alcohol consumption and tobacco
use have long topped that list, with recent years seeing the addition of couples who
cohabitate without the benefit of weddings and numerous other matters that
are far too controversial for discussion here.
While
some individuals seem unscathed by what the Bible says about a particular
matter, others seem hell bent on calling out those individuals who they have
determined are violating the laws of God.
What we need to consider is that we are not to judge or condemn others,
but we are to measure what we do by what the scripture says. Sometimes we need to deliver the message of
what the Bible says when someone asks us what we think about something they are
doing. They may not like our answer, but
at least we can plant the seed of God’s word in their lives.
