“Enter
through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads
to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and way is narrow that
leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
Matthew
7:13-14
When
Jesus said this He wanted us to understand that it is easy to go along to get
along in life, but that doing this often means that we compromise our faith and
our standing as Christians.
Some
actions that are viewed as acceptable are not acceptable when we consider what
Jesus taught. Things like ordering a
meal at a restaurant, eating most of it and then complaining that the food was
not “right” or complaining about slow service and expecting to get our meal for
free, make us look small. If we are
going to complain we need to consider if we really have a complaint or if we
are just being difficult. If we have a
problem with a restaurant meal, the time to complain is after the first bite,
not after we have licked the plate clean, and, if we go to a packed restaurant,
we should expect slower than normal service.
Being
a Christian is not about being tough. It’s
about learning to cut people some slack and watching how we act. It is easy to jump all over people when we
are not happy about something. It is
harder to step back and think about what we should do when things don’t suit
us.
The
gate is small, but the reward is greater than any small benefit we might
receive by taking easy way.
