And
do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Hebrews
13:16
When
I was a teenager, every year at Halloween our church youth group would trick or
treat for UNICEF. We would knock on
doors and say, “Trick or treat for UNICEF.”
And people would drop their spare change in our containers. The nickels and dimes we collected would
scarcely be missed by the donors, but we knew that those nickels and dimes
meant medical care and food for needy children around the world. In an hour on Sunday afternoon we made the
world a better place.
We
think of sacrifice is painful, but that is not necessarily true. When we give our time or our money to help
others we feel better about ourselves.
Our lives have extra meaning because we are doing more than only taking
care of our own.
And,
doing good pleases God.
