“The
good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings
out of his evil treasure what is evil.
But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall
give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and
by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew
12:35-37
We
know that what Jesus said is true but that does not mean that it is easy for us
to hear. Truth can be painful,
especially when it points out a fault or weakness we display. One of those places many of us are weak is in
the use of our words. We say things
which are cruel and even perhaps untrue in order to get people to do what we
want them to do.
Jesus
wants us to understand that we represent Him, and He expects us to act and
speak in a manner which furthers our mission to take the Gospel to the
world. We are to defend the weak and
fight for what is right in a manner which is fair and truthful.
Out
of the good treasure in our hearts we bring out what is good.
