“If
possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.” Romans 12:18
While
we are fighting the good fight, sometimes people will not leave us alone. It is hard to maintain peace with people who take
joy in wreaking havoc in other people’s lives. Yet, this is what the Apostle Paul advocates
because if we can continue doing right in the face of those who seek to disrupt
us, we will accomplish far more than if we waste time arguing.
Further,
I think Paul was thinking about Christians responding in a way that would give their antagonists a minimum of ammunition to use against them. If we cannot be at peace, we can take a
little time to choose the words we use to address our antagonists. The last thing we want is our antagonists bragging
about making us swear.
Squeaky
clean words leave no slimy residue.
