“John
the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and
all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan
River, confessing their sins. John was
clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his
diet was locusts and wild honey.” Mark
1:4-6
Our
society does not tolerate weird people very well. People who are untidy, or who adopt odd
living standards, or who speak up when we think they should be quiet, do not do
well. Yet, God gravitates to these
people when He has a message He wants delivered. John the Baptist followed a long line of
prophets, like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, and Zechariah, who delivered messages
of doom and gloom, peppered with the conditions required to reverse the curse. These were not people we would invite home
for dinner.
We
need to remember this and not be so quick to dismiss odd ball people who
want to talk to us about God. They might
have a message we need to hear.
